What a fractional role costs, compared with a hire
A full-time head of marketing comes with recruitment fees, employer costs and a long notice period. A fractional role gives you the senior thinking without the overheads.
| Option | Approximate monthly cost | Notice period | Time to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-time head of marketing | £7,000+ | Typically 1 to 3 months | 2 to 4 months to recruit |
| Marketing agency retainer | £2,500+ | Often 3 months | A few weeks |
| DuckTalk, three days | £2,100 | 30 days after the first three months | Usually within two weeks |
Illustrative comparison. Full-time figure based on the median advertised salary of £75,000 for head of marketing roles in the UK outside London (IT Jobs Watch, 2026), plus employer National Insurance and minimum pension contributions, before recruitment fees.
Clear, simple monthly payments
Fractional work is paid monthly in advance, which keeps things predictable for both of us and means your days are reserved before the month begins.
- Invoiced on the 1st
- You'll receive your invoice on the first working day of each month, payable within 7 days.
- Three-month minimum
- Real results take a few months to show, so engagements start with a three-month term.
- Then rolling monthly
- After the first three months, you can cancel with 30 days' notice at any time.
- Unused days
- If a day goes unused because of a delay on my side, it rolls over. Days unused at your request can roll over into the following month only.
- Change your plan
- Increase or reduce your days with notice before your next invoice.
- Monthly reporting
- Every month ends with a short report on what was done and what it achieved, so you can see the return on your spend.
Good to know
What does a fractional day actually include?
Whatever moves the needle that month. That might be strategy sessions with your leadership team, reviewing campaigns, coaching your sales team, writing messaging or preparing for investor meetings.
Do the days have to be full days?
No. Many clients prefer to split days into shorter sessions spread across the month, so support is there when you need it.
Can I start with an advisory session and move to fractional later?
Yes. Lots of clients start with a Decode session or sprint, and if you move to fractional within 30 days, that fee is credited against your first month. You can compare options on the advisory page.
Do you work with my existing team or freelancers?
Yes. I'm happy to lead, guide or work alongside your in-house team, agencies and freelancers, so everyone is pulling in the same direction.
What if I need more than three days a month?
That's no problem. The plans above cover the most common needs, and we can shape a larger plan together on a call.
